Alenia Marconi Systems Integrated Systems Division (ISD) has been awarded a contract by BAE SYSTEMS RO Defence Company, to supply a Fire Control/Situation Awareness system to the Swedish artillery end user. The system will be capable of engaging both static land targets and mobile naval targets.
The fire control system will be mounted within an A590 Braveheart 52 calibre self-propelled gun, and will be one of the first systems to use the NATO Artillery Ballistic Kernel to compute the gun bearing and elevation. The ISD system will interface directly with the existing Swedish Command and Control System (NAMCON) and with the AS9O Turret Control ComputedNavigation System.
The Fire Control System will receive fire command and fire control messages directly from NAMCON; which provides target identification, target location, target speed and direction of travel (for moving targets), prioritisation and the decision to engage. It will receive gun location from the A590 navigation system. The ISD Fire Control Unit will use the data to make ballistic calculations and other activities that are necessary to carry out engagement and transmit engagement data via the same data communications link to the NAMCON system.
The A590 Braveheart equipment and integrated software will be shipped to Sweden for a major live firing demonstration at the end of October 2001. Following the demonstration, the A590 Braveheart will be leased to Sweden for 2 years to train their Officers on modem artillery equipment. Dunng the lease period the system's capability against both static land targets and mobile naval targets will be assessed.
Alenia Marconi Systems is an equal shares joint venture between BAE SYSTEMS of the UK and Finmeccanica of Italy.
