Helio, Thales' AFV systems specialist, is introducing the new 50Cal and Lite variants of its SWARM system at DSEi. The 50Cal system is fully stabilised, remotely operated from beneath armour and fitted with Thales' latest Margot surveillance sensor package, offering a day, TI sighting capability and laser range finder. The Boeing 50Cal is a new addition to the highly successful Bushmaster series that offers the operator dual ammunition feed and Helio has incorporated an increased mission load capability of 500 rounds of ammunition to enhance the performance of the weapon system. Together SWARM and the 50Cal chain gun make a powerful combination.
SWARM Lite addresses the market requirement for a lighter, lower cost partner to SWARM. This system is built around the proven, in-service Helio 7.62mm GPMG pintle mount, is also remotely operated from beneath armour and has a day camera mounted alongside the weapon. SWARM Lite has been designed to be both mechanically and electronically interchangeable with other variants and it can be seen fitted to RG32 on the Vickers Defence Systems stand No 237.
Both systems have been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the UK MOD for current and future British Army programmes including the engineer tank system, the Terrier engineering tractor, future command and liaison vehicle and the future rapid effects system/armoured battlegroup support vehicle.
As vehicles are increasingly likely to be deployed in peace keeping roles in urban and rural environments, vulnerability of the crew has become a major concern. SWARM zero intrusion turret systems offer the crew the additional protection of remote operation from beneath armour and require minimal penetration of the roof.
Helio is a division of Thales Defence.
