BDL launches under vehicle surveillance system at DSEi

11 September 2001

BDL Systems, a supplier of security and defence systems for commercial and military organisations, is using DSEi as a UK launch pad for its Under Vehicle Surveillance System (UVSS). The system checks for under vehicle explosive devices, suspicious objects, contraband including drugs and personnel, plus modifications to the under carriage.

Already used on a number of strategic border crossings and by various commercial and military establishments world-wide, UVSS is available in static and mobile configurations. Approaching vehicles activate the control system, which in turn begins the image capture process. The UVSS then provides a clear picture of the underside of the vehicle on screen, within seconds of a vehicle having been driven over the system.

"With UVSS, operators can identify anything suspicious much faster and with greater certainty than conventional techniques such as handheld mirrors," said Mike Davies, MD of BDL Systems. "The fact that vehicles do not have to be stationary when the system is being used means that traffic flow is not interrupted, as is the case with other more traditional under vehicle surveillance techniques."

The UVSS uses digital line scan camera technology and images are displayed almost immediately on a touch screen monitor, with the facility to zoom or roam images for instant operator review. Images can be stored for later use and there is an option of incorporating automatic number plate recognition and capture, plus general scene cameras. The static UVSS can be configured in a fully networked format to allow for any number of traffic lanes and/or view stations to cope with traffic volume/site configuration. Installation is cost effective with minimum civil works required. Alternatively, the mobile UVSS can be rapidly deployed in under half an hour where required, from a suitable vehicle.
