Radamec Defence Systems is a partner with EADS' LFK (Lenkflugkorpersysteme) subsidiary, in its development of a land- based mobile, compact VSHORADS (Very Short Range Air Defence System). The system is designed to fire up to four fire and forget missiles such as the Raytheon Stinger Missile from a mobile platform.
Following successful firing trials carried out on a range in Turkey, the system has been formally qualified to fire as a VSHORAD for use with the Stinger missile.
With air power such a dominant factor in today's battlefield, the need to defend ground based forces and fixed installations from airborne threats is a major factor. Mobile, short range air defence, which is difficult to detect and pin-point, has grown to counter this threat.

Whilst this advanced system developed by LFK is very simple in concept, it is highly effective, with a pallet mounted missile launcher that can be deployed either directly on the ground or mounted on a vehicle for mobile applications.
The electro-optical suite includes a Radamec high performance TV camera, plus an IR camera and laser rangefinder, mounted on a Radamec dual axis director and the system incorporates a video.
The whole system is platform-mounted on a pallet, which can be installed on a number of light vehicle chassis. In this configuration it can be easily transported by aircraft or medium helicopters. Alternatively the pallet can be removed and placed on the ground for protection of fixed installations where it is easy to conceal and hard to detect.
Although the system is normally fitted with four missiles, it can support up to eight fire-and-forget SAMs, with storage for others on board as re-loads. The Matra BAe Mistral and the Russian Igla are two other SAMs that can be fired from this system.
