    Rheinmetall's solution for UK's LIMAWS

13 September 2001

Rheinmetall DeTec is using the 'Contego' and 'R 439' vehicles produced by its subsidiary Rheinmetall Landsysteme for its contender in the UK's Lightweight Mobile Artillery Weapon System (LIMAWS) programme. Having cleared the first hurdle of pre-qualification, Rheinmetall DeTec reckons it has a good chance of seeing this project through to successful completion.

Rheinmetall Landsysteme views the LIMAWS as a major technical challenge, because of the stringent performance requirements being levied on the planned vehicle. It needs to be light enough to be air-transportable, but must also feature tremendous tractive power. However, Rheinmetall Landsysteme, DeTec's in-house specialist for wheeled and tracked armoured vehicles, believe two of its vehicles are entirely capable of meeting these tough criteria.

The essential difference lies in their drive systems. While the "Airborne Wheeled Vehicle Contego 6x4" is a wheeled system, the alternative "R 439" is a tracked vehicle. Both vehicles offer massive tractive strength coupled with low weight, comfortably meeting the requirements specified by the British procurement authorities.

Rheinmetall Landsysteme is the product of a merger of Henschel Wehrtechnik, KUKA Wehrtechnik and MaK System Gesellschaft. Its products include heavy armoured fighting vehicles; light armoured tracked and wheeled vehicles; turrets; artillery systems; mine detection and mine clearing systems; command and reconnaissance systems, and comprehensive armour systems (including add-on armour and protection against mines).
