HUGIN ChartLink shows - Presenting the Environment for Saif Sareea II

13 September 2001

HUGIN ChartLink has presented a live dynamic picture at DSEi 2001 of the physical environment in 2D and 3D ready for military exploitation. Users can literally drill down from the upper atmosphere to the depths of the ocean bottom in 3D, creating their own 'fly-through' movies on demand.

HUGIN ChartLink, to be used by Amphibious Forces during the Saif Sareea II deployment, supports well over 20 different environmental data formats and the very latest compression techniques are used to ensure that all users can share this unique insight. Included in the system is support for multiple projections and datums from around the world, giving it a global capability.

One of the major objectives for the Saif Sareea II Joint Force deployment in October will be to assess the military advantage that can be obtained from a better understanding of the environment. This will be achieved by the production and sharing of a Joint Recognised Environmental Picture (REP) using the HUGIN ChartLink system.

The basis of the REP is a complete data set for the entire area of operations termed the Maritime Foundation Data (MFD), being produced by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO). This consists of vector and raster maps and charts, imagery obtained from land observation and environmental sources, data on oceanfronts, wrecks, physical ocean properties, and also previous survey data.

The Fleet Weather and Oceanographic Centre (FWOC) at Northwood will then develop the REP throughout the deployment with a combination of the very latest front line data from units such as the survey vessel HMS ROEBUCK and the amphibious forces themselves.

As well as being used at the UKHO and at the Northwood Headquarters, HUGIN ChartLink will also be deployed onboard all the Amphibious Task Group units, including HMS ILLUSTRIOUS, and HMS FEARLESS. The Directorate of Naval Surveying, Oceanography and Meteorology (DNSOM) sponsor the HUGIN ChartLink system, and this deployment is intended to put the concept of populating and sharing the REP to the test.
