MTU Friedrichhafen GmbH is enlarging its product range for various military applications. In the near future the company will offer a completely new and revolutionary generation of high-performance diesel engines for tanks, the HPD-family (High Power Density).
The engine family is based on a highly compact, high speed, 4 stroke diesel engine and will be available in 6V to 1 6V configuration. The power output for diesel-electric drive will be from 552 kW to 1 472 kW (750 - 2002 mHP).

As a result of improved technological features and weight optimised parts the HPD 6V achieves a reduction in weight and volume of approximately 60 %.
The main features of the engine concept are one litre swept volume per cylinder and an integrated design of subsystems such as oil pumps, dry oil sumps or the engine oil heat exchanger. The HPD family is equipped with a common rail injection system, a fully digitised engine management and a high temperature cooling system.
The HPD-engine concept allows an exceptional flexibility for its integration into existing and new engine compartments. Based on the exhaust system and charge air supply of the tank the turbocharging system can be located on either the driving end, or the free end of the engine. As a consequence multiple block geometries are possible.
The HPD can be adjusted for either electric drive or conventional drive with hydro mechanical transmission.
