GKN demonstrates fuel tank and flotation system capabilities

14 September 2001

GKN Aerospace Services company, FPT Industries, is projecting its capabilities in fighting vehicle (FV) fuel systems, aviation self sealing fuel tanks, fuel handling and delivery systems and helicopter emergency flotation equipment.

FPT is a supplier of self sealing flexible and rigid fuel tanks for fighting vehicles, helicopters and aircraft. They can be produced to a wide range of customer specifications, including in crashworthy and anti-ballistic proof forms or incorporating explosion suppressant features. FPT provides fuel storage capability for vehicles including Scorpion, Challenger 2, Hagglunds BVS 10, Warrior, Stormer and helicopters such as the V22 Osprey Tilt Rotor, Chinook, EHlOl, Lynx and Sea King.

FPT introduced self sealing bladder technologies to FV vehicle manufacturers to improve battlefield survivability and provide a superior battlefield repair capability. That philosophy has now been extended to include the complete "turnkey" fuel system. The FPT fuel systems have been designed using a "Modular Rapid Replacement LRU" philosophy incorporating all of the major cooling, filtration, storage and delivery systems into no more than 8 easy replacement units.

FPT also provides complete battlefield and civilian fuel handling solutions, including both long term storage and rapid fuel / water delivery products. FPT storage and air portable delivery systems range from 20-20,000 litres.

In emergency helicopter flotation systems FPT provides a system development capability that spans the whole process from initial hydrodynamic model testing through to system design and certification. FPT uses lightweight composite material to fabricate the flotation bags, achieving significant weight savings.
