The modern infantry soldier will need a cost effective and reliable method of connecting his personal equipment such as GPS, radio, data terminals, remote weapon sights and night vision equipment In effect a personal local area network will be required.
In order not to hinder the soldier's fighting capability by wiring running around the torso to body extremities outside his clothing, Amphenol, (in cooperation with webbing and equipment manufacturers) are developing Active Webbing.
In addition to being a leading military connector supplier Amphenol Is one of the largest manufacturers of ribbon cable. This product has a flat profile and can be made very flexible and can easily be encapsulated inside the soldier's webbing.
The Active Webbing will require terminating and connecting to various pieces of equipment and therefore plastic mouldings and connectors am being developed to complement the Active Webbing.
The major advantage of the Active Webbing is that the soldier is not aware that he has all these cables around his body, they have become a natural pan of his kit, something that he wears everyday. The cabling is also much lighter than conventional cables as a secondary or outer jacket for the cable Is not required.
All sorts of cables can be encapsulated in the webbing whether it be a single conductor, twisted pairs, coaxial or even fibre optic
