Alvis demonstrates latest Piranha system

22 June 2000

The latest Alvis Piranha has now been further optimised for desert conditions after extensive investment in technology enhancements. These enhancements have been built upon the success of Alvis Warrior in service with the British Army and used with such success in many flashpoints around the world, including Bosnia and Kosovo, and the highly successful Desert Warrior Programme in Kuwait.

A number of unique features including ABS, CTIS and a Digital Engine Management System are now available. In addition to this, a new NBC Reconnaissance Variant is also announced to add to the existing family, which includes Armoured Personnel Carrier, Command, Repair & Recovery, Mortar Carrier, Mortar Fire Control, Forward Observation Officer, Ambulance, VIP, 90mm Fire Support, 25mm and Surveillance.

The 8x8 Desert Piranha can be fitted with a Central Tyre Inflation System including pressure adjustment on the move, independent pressure optimisation, high-speed warning and an intelligent capability to inflate damaged or leaking tyres. The CTIS results in greater mobility and reduced tyre wear. The Piranha braking system, which already has dual circuitry and exhaust retardation, has been enhanced for Desert Piranha with the incorporation of a modern ABS.

Piranha's well-proven Detroit Diesel Silver series engine has had the latest Electronic Management System added. The improved performance and reduced emissions result from the electronic control of the engine and automatic monitoring of critical automotive systems. The EMS also provides a diagnostic interface for maintenance, repair and data storage for future analysis. These technology upgrades for Desert Piranha have provided a faster, safer and more mobile vehicle which is easier to maintain.

A total of 225 Piranha vehicles in 10 variants have now been supplied by Alvis to a number of Middle East countries.
