Singapore buys $11 million worth of Harris radios

22 June 2000

Harris Corporation has been awarded an $1.1 million contract from the Singapore Ministry of Defence (MOD) for its Falcon II family of tactical radio equipment. The contract includes ultra high-frequency (UHF) radios for ground-to-air voice/data communication.

The Falcon II family will provide Singapore with a communications system that allows soldiers to communicate over greater range with optional frequency extensions down to the very high-frequency (VHF) band which reduces the number of radios a soldiers is required to carry. Product shipments will begin this summer.

"The modular Falcon II radio family easily accommodates new technology and upgrades," said Brendan O'Connell, regional manager, Asia/Pacific Sales, Harris HF Communications Division, Rochester, N.Y. "Unlike conventional hardware-based radios, these software-based radios are easily reprogrammed allowing features to be added quickly and cost effectively as the Singapore MOD's communication needs evolve."

Software upgrades can be programmed through the radio's data port without opening the unit. In addition, the system takes advantage of a digital platform built to accommodate future waveforms based on both 8.33,12.5, and 25khz channel spacing through software upgrades.
