Teuchos Group demonstrates its smart technology

22 June 2000

The French company group, Teuchos - it means 'tool' or 'weapon' in classical Greek - is exhibiting its smart technology for the first time at Eurosatory. Formed in 1990, the Teuchos Group is one of France's leading software engineering companies, providing discreet management solutions across a market sector which includes: defence, aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, banking and finance, transport and services, and energy.

The hallmark of the Teuchos operation is its ability to support a wide range of engineering, construction, software and hardware projects. In the Defence sector, Teuchos enjoys a strategic partnership with Aerospatiale-Matra, and has the French MoD, Delegation Generale Armement, as a shareholder.

At the forefront of its display at Eurosatory, Teuchos is demonstrating its innovative HELITACS system; a smart integrated moving map display and mission planning system for helicopter and special operations. Already accepted into service for French Army Aviation helicopters, HELITACS was developed last year in response to an immediate operational requirement set by the French MoD for use on Gazelle and Puma helicopters.

Based on Windows NT, the generic software is simple to operate and compliant with a wide range of COTS PC hardware. The display tablet can be strapped to the pilot's thigh, where it rests comfortably without hindering his movement. Weighing only 3 kg, its soft-touch display panel allows quick and easy access to tactical information and topographical data.

Transmission protocols are set to common NATO standards, and of course, GPS is a central element of HELITACS. In use, the pilot can call up detailed map displays and use the system as both a navaid and tactical planning system for day and night flying operations.

User training is straightforward; typically an operator can become proficient in less than 2 hours. As a fully integrated system that requires minimal modification to fit to in-service helicopters, HELITACS offers a cost-effective enhancement package for a range of light and medium lift helicopters.

Whilst it was originally developed for use on helicopters, the HELITACS system offers other vehicle commanders, especially those amongst Special Forces and reconnaissance units, a rugged solution for tactical C4I requirements.

Georges Salessy told DSD that "HELITACS has already proved to be a welcomed enhancement for Gazelle and Puma pilots. It is a cost effective and simple system to operate, and interest is strong both here in France and abroad on the export market."
