Ericsson Microwave Systems AB have been awarded a contract by the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) for a three dimensional search radar with integrated command and control for air defence. The contract is worth over US$60 million and deliveries will start in 2003.
The system is based on the Ericsson Giraffe Agile Multi Beam (AMB) radar, which has a very high capacity to search for, detect and track both airborne and surface targets. The system, developed during the late 1990s, uses newly developed microwave technology and is specially designed for multiple tasks.
Tailored for use with medium and short range surface-to-air missiles, the GIRAFFE AMB includes an integrated C3 system that allows it to act as the command and control centre in an air defence system. It can be integrated into a cluster of netted sensor systems and so provide a wide area situation picture.
The system will be integrated with the RBS 97 Hawk and RBS 23 BAMSE systems and will be a joint resource for all three Services of the Swedish Armed Forces.
