Raytheon Company has been awarded a $21.3 million contract with options by the United States Army for foreign military sales of Stinger air defence missiles, launchers and support equipment to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Italy. The Stinger sale is made in conjunction with the sale of 24 Avenger vehicle-mounted systems provided by Boeing.
"Stinger-RMP (reprogrammable microprocessor) and Block l missiles for international sales and U.S. Army retrofit are in ongoing production at Raytheon," said Mike Crisp, Stinger program director. Stinger-RMP uses an advanced infrared/ultraviolet rosette scan imaging seeker and target adaptive guidance to insure an extremely high hit-to-kill accuracy on modern air threats. Raytheon is under contract for the new build and retrofit of more than 10,000 Stinger Block I missiles for protection of the U.S. Army's contingency forces
Stinger is the only missile deployed in each United States military service arid is sold to 20 countries world-wide and to multiple services. Stinger can be shoulder-fired, tripod-mounted, truck-mounted, armoured-mounted, naval-mounted and helicopter-mounted.
Stinger Block I combines the high performance of the RIAP seeker with an improved guidance section for precision guidance against next generation threats including cruise missile,. UAVs, agile attack helicopters, stealthy fighters, and improved countermeasures.
Technology work is under way for the next generation Stinger P31 missile which includes an advanced infrared focal plane array seeker and kinematic upgrades. Stinger has been deployed in virtually every United States and allied combat operation over the past two decades with more than 270 confirmed kills of hostile aircraft; more than any other world-wide fighter, helicopter or air defence missile since World War II.
