BARCO chosen for Bridgelayer Tank programme

23 June 2000

BARCO Display Systems has been selected by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW)to supply its Vetronics Flat Panel Display System, BARCO Vector. BARCO Vector will be used as the visualisation system of the KMW Opto-electronic observation and laser range finding system, to be integrated into the Panzerschnellbrucke 2/Bruglegger MLC 70 for which MAN Technology is the main contractor.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann selected BARCO Vector for its flexibility in interfacing with various sensor systems, its specific HMI concept, and for its split design, which allows easy integration into confined spaces and consoles. The Vector system that will be supplied to KMW, consists of two 10.4" panel modules PM126, one for the driver and one for the commander. The displays are driven by a multi-input, intelligent electronics box, which is interfacing with and driving the several cameras and the observation and laser range finder sensor platform.

BARCO Vector has been designed for observation and visualisation on board armoured vehicles. The Vector Display System combines video camera input with standard text On-Screen Display, as well as graphics overlay created by a powerful Symbol Generator. It combines a Panel Module with a Video Control Module.

These modules, featuring a light-weight, composite material, ruggedised housing, can be installed separately or mounted together if there is not enough space available in the vehicle cockpit. Both modules are connected by means of a single cable, the VectorLink, and can be installed separately up to 5 meter from each other.

At present, two test beds Bridge Layer Tanks for the German and Dutch Armies' troop trials are in the development phase. A series programme is scheduled to start in 2004. The German Army has plans to procure a total of 35 bridgelayer tanks and the Dutch Army to purchase a total of 14.

BARCO Display Systems designs and manufactures high-resolution display systems, displays, graphics controllers and display subsystems.
