FN Herstal gets two small arms orders

The Dutch Army has signed a contract for a substantial quantity of FN Herstal's 5.56mm MINIMI machine guns has just been signed . Under the terms of this contract, FN Herstal will start supplying the MINIMI machine guns this coming August and deliveries will be completed by the beginning of next year.

The MINIMI will equip all dismounted infantry unit and each platoon will use two MINIMI machine guns which will double its current firepower.

The MINIMI Para was selected because of its compact size, measuring only 766 mm with retracted sliding butt and its light weight, 7.1 kg.

The 5.56 Special Purpose weapon (SPW) has been selected as the new light weight machine gun for the US Special Operations Command. According to FN Herstal the SPW was the clear winner over all other tested weapon systems. Its selection was based on overall performance, reliability and mission success rate.

Initial quantity is for 425 weapons with a potential for up to 2,500.
