Messier-Dowty shows off Landing Gear

18 July 2000

From today's solutions to tomorrow's advanced concept aircraft, landing gear manufacturer Messier-Dowty will exhibit a wide range of civil and military landing gear at Farnborough 2000 (hall 4, stand F1).

Industry leading products on display will include: Airbus A320 main landing gear, Boeing JSF X-32 nose landing gear, Boeing V-22 Osprey main landing gear, Bombardier Global Express main landing gear, Boeing F/A-18 E/F nose landing gear and a landing gear concept for ultra large commercial aircraft.

A320 Messier-Dowty began manufacturing the main landing gear for the Airbus A320 in the 1980s. With the rapid growth of Airbus' popular single aisle range (A320, A319, A321 and upcoming A318), the main gear has undergone further development with the goal of achieving significant product enhancements and parts commonality for all A320 derived aircraft. To date, Messier-Dowty has delivered over 1,300 landing gear sets for the Airbus single aisle program.

JSF X-32 Messier-Dowty is responsible for the complete landing gear system for the Concept Development Phase (CDP) of the Boeing's JSF X-32, comprising gear structures, nose wheel steering, wheels, brakes, tires, as well as the gear and landing gear door hydraulics. The company is also in charge of integration within the landing gear system. The latest design of JSF nose gear, having recently completed successful drop testing, is on display in the Boeing JSF exhibit area with the full scale JSF aircraft display.

V-22 The Boeing V-22 Osprey main landing gear, designed and supplied by Messier-Dowty, is manufactured predominantly from Hy-Tuff, a high strength steel that exhibits superior fracture toughness and corrosion resistance. The two-stage shock absorber is able to withstand landings of up to 24 feet per second.

Global Express The Bombardier Global Express landing gear represents the first completely integrated landing gear system ever developed for a business jet, combining a number of complementary sub-systems into one fully integrated and comprehensive package. This system includes the main and nose gears, together with the wheels, tires, brakes, nose steering wheel, brake control system, landing gear control and indication system, door mechanisms, manual release system and associated hydraulic components.

F/A-18 E/F The new F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet builds on the successful, combat-proven night attack capabilities of the original F/A-18 C/D Hornet built by Boeing. The Messier-Dowty nose landing gear comprises the shock strut, drag brace, retract actuator, launch bar and power unit.

Ultra large landing gear The future generation of Ultra Large Aircraft, capable of carrying over 500 passengers, will require innovative new designs in landing gear systems. Capitalising on its extensive experience with large civil aircraft programmes, Messier-Dowty is working with aircraft manufacturers to provide optimum solutions to tomorrow's challenges.
