Thomson-CSF Saturn radio flies on UK WAH-64 Apache helicopter

25 July 2000

Thomson-CSF Comsys' TRA 6021 Saturn radio has completed its first flight on board the UK's WAH-64 helicopter at Boeing's Mesa facility in Arizona as part of an extensive test campaign with this new generation of Saturn-standard radios.

TRA 6021, the airborne version of Thomson-CSF's Saturn radio product line, was developed in co-operation with Raytheon Systems

The new radio systems are fully compliant with the ICAO's new 8.33 kHz channel spacing requirement and employ the latest ECCM and fast frequency hopping techniques. They are based on Saturn technology to guarantee full NATO interoperability.

The contract signed last year with GKN Westland Helicopters calls for the delivery of 150 TRA 6021 Saturn radios for the British Army's sixty-seven WAH-64 Apache helicopters.

It is Thomson-CSF Comsys' second major radio equipment contract in the UK, following an order worth £23 million placed in 1999 for military transport planes.
