Redifon-MEL and BAE SYSTEMS have teamed to propose a solution to the Fully Integrated Communications System (FICS) requirement for the RN's new Type 45 destroyers. Redifon-MEL will act as prime contractor and system design authority, whilst BAE SYSTEMS will be responsible for prime systems integration and risk management, and for security accreditation issues. A key feature of the team's proposal will be the pull-through of technology and products proven within existing programmes, reducing risk and non-recurring expenditure (NRE), within an open systems design capable of cost-effective future enhancement and growth.
DERA is to carry out weapons clearance trials for the Apache Longbow helicopter. The helicopters and their weapons have been purchased "off the shelf" so the ordnance they use has been designed and built in the US, Canada and Norway to potentially different design standards from those in the UK. Ordnance trials are therefore required in order to clear the weapons for UK service use. DERA has been selected to carry out the trials as it has the expertise at various sites to perform the required tests and meet the tight time schedule set by the DPA (Defence Procurement Agency). Trials will begin in September/October across a range of DERA sites.
BAE SYSTEMS has won a key three-year contract - with an option to extend up to seven years - to support the UK's Satellite Anchor Station System (UKSASS). The multi-million pound in-service support (ISS) and post-delivery services (PDS) contract was awarded to the Communications & Defence Infrastructure business within BAE SYSTEMS Avionics Tactical Products at Christchurch, UK. Th programme will be implemented in three phases and covers support for anchor stations at RAF facilities at Oakhanger, Colerne and Defford. These establishments form the heart of the UK Military Satellite Communications System, UKMSCS, which provides long-range, secure, high-capacity communications for British forces worldwide.
