German C-160s to get AN/AAR-54(V)

27 July 2000

Germany's Ministry of Defence has selected Northrop Grumman Corporation's AN/AAR-54(V) passive missile approach warning system for C-160 transport aircraft.

The AN/AAR-54(V) is an imaging, ultraviolet (UV) sensor system that detects UV energy passively, tracks multiple sources and quickly classifies each source as a lethal missile, non-lethal missile or clutter. The system can be used independently, as a stand-alone detection system or as part of an integrated directional infrared countermeasures self-protection suite.

The current award is for a nine-month aircraft integration and test program. Additional terms of the contract were not disclosed. An 18-lot option is expected to be exercised upon successful completion of the integration and test programme with an option for five more missile warning systems.

Designed for use on tactical and wide-body aircraft, helicopters and combat vehicles, the AN/AAR-54(V) is currently in production for the US Special Operations Command and the armed forces of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Portugal.
