BAE SYSTEMS Avionics has demonstrated their third generation Striker Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS) to a joint service team of US and UK pilots as part of the fourth Full Mission Simulation for the Boeing Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
The Striker helmet demonstrates two significant advances in helmet technologies. Firstly it replaces the Light Emitting Diode and Cathode Ray Tube display technologies of previous generation helmets with Liquid Crystal Displays. This gives a lighter, more capable display without the need to route high voltages to the helmet. Secondly the helmet uses an advanced optical tracker which eliminates the need for magnetic mapping of each cockpit, which applied to earlier helmets.
The JSF Helmet Mounted Display System is designed to display symbology and imagery with an accuracy that makes a conventional Head Up Display redundant. The HMDS is part of the Pilot Vehicle Interface subsystem which is being jointly developed by Boeing, BAE SYSTEMS and Harris Corporation.
The system was an integral part of the Pilot Vehicle Interface during all of the 100 missions flown. Stan Kasprzyk, Boeing JSF cockpit manager said "The Striker helmet represents a major step in technology maturation towards our concept for the operational JSF."
