Lean manufacturing for Eurofighter cockpit canopy

27 July 2000

Aerospace Composite Technologies (ACT), a GKN Aerospace company, and BAE SYSTEMS have implemented a lean manufacturing initiative for the Eurofighter cockpit canopy and windscreens, which are produced by ACT.

ACT is the sole source supplier of the cockpit canopies and windscreens on the Eurofighter, a contract worth in the region of £40 million, based on the four participating nations' requirements of 620 aircraft, plus the potential Typhoon exports.

The canopy is the largest produced for a military fighter aircraft, at 2.6m long for the single seat and 2.7m long for the twin seat. ACT has invested in state-of-the-art handling, machining, inspection and test facilities to ensure achievement of high levels of accuracy and repeatability.

On the Eurofighter assembly line, measures are being introduced to provide a seamless operation between supplier and customer, which include minimising stock held on each site and introducing on time delivery to the line, all of which reduces the potential for damage and scrap and delivers financial benefits.

Both companies have made significant investment in the manufacturing facilities and processes for canopy manufacture and assembly.BAE SYSTEMS and ACT are now in the process of agreeing measures designed to maximise the benefits and return on investment, by concentrating on supply chain management, a key focus for GKN Aerospace.
