Smiths Industries wins CH-47D engine monitoring deal

28 July 2000

Smiths Industries Aerospace was awarded a contract to provide engine vibration monitoring kits for the T-55 series engines. The kits will be fielded at a rate of approximately 12 per year for 5 years and will be used for regular vibration checks on the US Army CH-47D aircraft. The systems are designed and manufactured at the Signal Processing Systems facility in San Diego, CA.

The procurement is initially planned for the new T-55-GA714A engine on the CH-47D, however it can be retro-fitted to the existing T-55-L712 as well. This equipment, when used with the Aircraft Vibration Analyzer (AVA), will allow a greater degree of accuracy and detail than other systems currently in use.

Additionally, because of the digital storage method of the AVA, this system will enable the Army to begin long term trending of engine vibration health to help protect the Army's investment in the new engine.
