Dowty Group's Hamble Structures business had been awarded the series production contract to supply supersonic fuel tanks for the Eurofighter Typhoon. This will be worth some £30 million but it takes Dowty Group's overall Eurofighter value well past £150 million on current firm aircraft orders, prior to expected export sales.
The Eurofighter Typhoon's fuel tank has been purpose-designed to fly supersonic fitted under both wings and fuselage stations on the aircraft. A unique aspect of the design is that the pylon is integral and the complete tank can be jettisoned, leaving a clean configuration for the rest of any mission.
Hamble was initially selected as prime contractor for the development phase and led a consortium with European workshare partners CASA (Spain), DASA (Germany) and Alenia (Italy). It will now manage the production phase in addition to manufacturing various details, assembling the centre sections and carrying out 50% of the final assembly and testing
Commenting on the announcement, Geoff Smith, Dowty Group's Chief Executive, saw this as a "... a further strengthening of Dowty Group's position as a major supplier on Eurofighter. With respective workshare partners, other Dowty businesses are supplying a range of systems and components including flight controls, air intake actuators, accessory gearbox, landing gear hydraulics and turbine engine components
