European JAA Certifies Goodrich's SkyWatch collision avoidance system

24 July 2002

The European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) has granted Joint Technical Standard Order (JTSO) approval to Goodrich Corporation for its new SkyWatch(R) HP Traffic Collision Avoidance System.

SkyWatch HP is an active surveillance traffic advisory system that operates as an air-to-air or ground-to-air interrogation device .After receiving replies to its interrogations, the SkyWatch HP system computes the responding aircraft's range, bearing, relative altitude and closure rate, predicting potential traffic conflicts. Aural traffic alerts are sounded through the aircraft's existing audio system or headsets and visual targets are displayed using Traffic Collision Avoidance System- (TCAS) like symbology.

The HP version, as with the original SkyWatch system, allows pilots the option of displaying traffic onto a variety of Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) as well as overlaying traffic information on weather radar indicators using Goodrich's Radar Graphics Computer. The new SkyWatch HP also has the ability to share a 3" display with the Stormscope model WX-1000 Weather Mapping System.SkyWatch HP's enhanced display options include an output for interface with compatible Electronic Flight Instrument Systems (EFIS).

With the ability to track and display traffic out to 35 nm, SkyWatch HP adds an effective closure rate of 1200 knots, allowing aircraft at speeds of up to 600 knots each to effectively track each other. The SkyWatch HP system has the flexibility to be installed as either a Traffic Advisory System (TAS) or as a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS I), depending on the display and antenna configuration.
