Pratt & Whitney Canada's (P&WC) PW800 engine has been selected as one of two finalists considered to power the new Russian Regional Jet (RRJ) family of aircraft. The RRJ is currently under development by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft in collaboration with Ilyushin of Russia, Yakovlev design bureaus of Russia and The Boeing Company of the US.
The PW800 is being developed for the RRJ by a team that includes P&WC, MTU (Germany) and Fiat Avio (Italy), among others. P&WC and MTU also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Aviadvigatel in support of the development of the PW800.
P&WC and its affiliate Pratt & Whitney-Rus have established a liaison office in Moscow in support of this program.
P&WC has been active in Russia for over 10 years, and in 1997 strengthened its commitment to the country by establishing Pratt & Whitney-Rus, which specialises in the design, development, certification and testing of gas turbine engines.
In 1998, the P&W-Rus achieved a major milestone by obtaining a Civil Aviation Engines Developer's Certificate from the Aviation Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee of Russia. As part of its mandate, P&W-Rus is also designing engine components in Russia. For example, the company designed and developed the transition module for the PW127 turboshaft embodied in the MI-38 helicopter. In addition, P&W-Rus is in the process of expanding its activities with Russian manufacturing industries.
