All Nippon Airways chooses PW4090 engines for 777-300 aircraft

26 July 2002

All Nippon Airways has decided on Pratt & Whitney PW4090 engines for the firm order for five Boeing 777-300 aircraft recently placed with Boeing. Two of the aircraft will be delivered in 2004 and three in 2006.

The value of the order to Pratt & Whitney is approximately $154 million. The order will increase to 34 the number of Pratt & Whitney-powered 777 aircraft in ANA's fleet. ANA was one of the first 777 customers, taking delivery of its first 777 in October 1995. Since then, 20 additional Pratt & Whitney-powered 777s have been delivered.

PW4090 engines power the All Nippon Airways 777-200ER aircraft that has received the highest extended-range, twin-engine operations (ETOPS) rating available. The Japanese Civil Aviation Board has cleared ANA to operate the aircraft up to 207 minutes from a suitable alternate airport on long over-water routes. This rating allows ANA to fly the most direct, economical point-to-point routes on ETOPS flights.

The PW4000-powered 777 was the first airplane/engine combination to have a 180-minute ETOPS certificate from its very first day of operation. At that time 180 minutes was the highest ETOPS rating available. Regulatory authorities increased the maximum to 207 minutes to cover very long trans-Pacific routes. The PW4000-powered 777 was the first certified for that rating.
