AMS has delivered six advanced Terminal Radar Simulators (TRS) to the Central Air Traffic Control School at RAF Shawbury. These are now fully commissioned and the system has proved to be so flexible that staff at the School were able to 'map' the airfield and surrounds of Bagram Airport to train RAF personnel prior to deployment on Air Traffic Control duties in Afghanistan.
AMS was selected by the UK Defence Procurement Agency in 1999 to provide six simulators for the RAF Replacement Initial Radar Training Simulator (RIRTS) contract.
Each of the new systems looks and behaves like a modern Military Approach Control Room. They provide broad functionality with greater flexibility to increase programme options and the effectiveness of the comprehensive controller training provided. TRS provides emulations of the RAF's current precision approach radar displays.
Each simulator comprises ten workstations. Student positions for Approach, Director, Zone and Precision Approach Radar (Talkdown) are linked to 4 Pseudo Pilot and 2 Supervisor workstations. All positions have fully integrated communications emulating the operational equipment. The six TRS simulators are designed to provide Shawbury with greater flexibility in handling courses of varying size and aptitude, with a total of 60 operator workstations.
The TRS is now being offered to other Military ATC Training Establishments as a product known as Military ATC Synthetic Environment (MASE).
