The RSN is acquiring a new series of 12 Patrol Vesssels to replace the existing CPCs which are being transferred to the Police Coastguard. The new Patrol Vessels are the first ships to be completely designed and built locally, by Singapore Technologies Shipguiding and Engineering. The first Patrol Vessel, the RSS Fearless, was launched last year. To date, five such ships have been launched and the delivery of all 12 is expected by next year. The Patrol Vessels are powered by water-jet propulsion systems. The ships can reach speeds of more than 20 knots and are more manoeuvrable and less expensive to maintain than conventional systems. The Patrol Vessels have advanced weapon systems such as the Mistral surface-to-air missiles, a 76-mm gun, navigation and communication systems. The specifications of the Patrol Vessels are: displacement 500 tonnes; length 55m; beam 8.6m; draft 2.2m; maximum speed 23 kts.
