Rolls-Royce works with AVIC II on twin-engined Z-11 Helicopter

19 June 2001

Rolls-Royce plc is working with China Aviation Industry Corporation II (AVIC II) to develop a twin-engined version of the Z-11 helicopter powered by the Rolls-Royce Model 250 engine.

Rolls-Royce President, Helicopters, Stuart Mullan and China Aviation Industry Corporation II Vice President Shi Jianzhong signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Paris Airshow.

Stuart Mullan said: "The Model 250's proven track record, experience and reliable performance makes it an ideal choice for re-engining light helicopters. The Model 250 is already in operation in China with six operators on three different applications.

"We are looking forward to extending the existing relationship between Rolls-Royce and AVIC, and the large number of opportunities which it presents for the helicopter market."

Shi Jianzhong said: "The Z-11 helicopter has been developed by helicopter specialist Changhe Aircraft Industries Corporation, a wholly-owned affiliate of AVIC II located in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi. The Z-11 is a 2 ton-class, single-engine light helicopter, powered by the locally-built WZ-8D engine. The single-engined Z-11 has recently been granted its civil airworthiness certificate, and is currently entering service in China's commercial market.

"In order to meet customer requirements and expand our market share, we are looking to further improve the performance and reliability of the Z-11. This agreement with Rolls-Royce will enable us to study the development of a twin-engine version of the Z-11. We very much welcome the opportunity to expand the relationship between Rolls-Royce and AVIC II into new areas of co-operation."
