For the first time at the Paris Air Show, the Franco-German Eurocopter Group is presenting no less than 3 new types of helicopter. Two of them are making their first public showing.
The first newcomer is the light single-engine EC 130 in the 2.5 metric ton class. The EC 130 was officially launched in the USA last February at HeliExpo, but has not participated before in a European air show. The second new helicopter is the twin-engine EC 145 in the 4 metric ton category, which is being unveiled here for the first time. The third helicopter, derived from the well known Super Puma/Cougar, is the twin-engine EC 225/EC 725 in the 11 metric ton class.
The EC 130 B4 is derived from the Ecureuil AS 350 B3. With a larger cabin floor and baggage compartment, it incorporates components from the EC 120 B Colibri, such as the windshield and doors. It has the same shrouded Fenestron tail rotor as the EC 135. An extra 25 cm across the cabin and 10% more space in the baggage compartment mean the EC 130 is ideally suited for passenger transport (pilot + 7 passengers). With a noise level 7 dB below the ICAO Chapter 8 limits, the EC 130 B4 is one of the quietest helicopters in the world.
The EC 145 is an extensively modified version of the multi-function BK 117-Cl. The much larger cabin can carry 1 pilot + 9 passengers. Its cabin and cockpit design (Avionique Nouvelle) also insure low noise levels (6.7 dB below the GAO standards and 60% less noise than the BK 117 Cl), higher performance capabilities, and more comfort. The access to its roomy cabin is particularly easy, thanks to the elimination of the central uprights, and the presence of two large sliding doors and a rear clamshell door.
The EC 225/EC 725 is derived from the famous Super Puma/Cougar family, and is Eurocopter's latest addition in the 11 metric ton category.
The technology on the EC 225/EC 725 means enhanced safety, higher performances, and lower costs. And the new 5-blade Sphenflex main rotor offers improved reliability and better performances. Two other features are a complete de-icing/anti-icing system for extending the operating envelope, and a hydraulically operated rear ramp for easier loading. With a load capacity - 2 pilots, 29 troops, and a 5000 kg sling load - and a maximum range of 1000 NM, the EC 225/EC 725 can perform a very wide variety of missions that will satisfy even the most demanding customers.
These new helicopters are giving a series of flying demonstrations at the Paris Air Show.
