TRW wins $50 million A340 contract

20 June 2001

TRW Aeronautical Systems (Lucas Aerospace) has been awarded a contract from STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH to supply the cargo system Power Drive Units (PDU) for Airbus Industrie's new A340-500/600 aircraft. The contract is worth in excess of $50 million over the life of the programme.

TRW Aeronautical Systems will supply both the doorway and longitudinal PDUs. The self-lifting and self-retracting doorway PDUs enable cargo to be moved into and around the cargo bay door. There are 16 doorway PDUs on each A340-500/600 aircraft. The longitudinal PDUs, which are spring loaded, enable cargo to be moved around the cargo bay. Thirty-two longitudinal PDUs are used on the A340-500 aircraft and 48 on the A340-600 aircraft.

Having already secured contracts on the A340-500/600 for primary and secondary flight controls, thrust reverser actuation and cargo mechanical systems, TRW Aeronautical Systems has more than $615 million of equipment on this new program. TRW is also supplying complete engine control systems on the latest derivatives of Rolls-Royce's Trent family of engines, which will power the Airbus A340-500/600.
