Goodrich and NuBax introduce improved airline seating

21 June 2001

Goodrich Corporation and NuBax Vertical Innovations, LLC havesigned a License and Technical Assistance agreement to launch an aerospace seat cushion design that may help reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

According to Jeff Yaker, Goodrich's President, Aircraft Seating & Propulsion Systems, "This innovative NuBax cushion has the potential for many different aircraft seating applications. The product offers a unique design with multi-density foams, which are contoured and strategically placed to reduce seated pressure by up to 50% and disperse the pressure over a wider area. This results in enhanced passenger comfort. Additionally, the cushion encourages proper-seated posture and aids in the reduction of muscular fatigue. This along with decreased pressure on the deep veins on the lower extremities helps reduce the risks of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). "

The principal of the new seating is to provide natural support for the spine, as well as isolation from vibration that may contribute to lower back pain. According to reserchers, there is less stress on the spinal components by maintaining the natural contours of the spine. Upholding the natural curve of the spine allows the tendons and ligaments to support the spine instead of using muscles which quickly become fatigued. Seat and cushion design can contribute to lower back pain.

Yaker continued, "We are very pleased to be able to expand our relationship with NuBax in the development and marketing of this product. Once the flying public and flight crews become aware of its availability there will be both push and pull to bring the product to market. The technology can be used not only for use in passenger seating but also pilot, flight attendant, and other crew member seating. "
