Thales, EADS team to bid for French DNG3D programme

17 June 2003

Thales Communications and EADS Systems and Defence Electronics are forming a consortium to submit a joint bid for the second production phase of the DNG3D digital geographical data programme (Donnees Numeriques Geographiques en 3 Dimensions). The teaming arrangement is designed to optimise the level of service provided to the customer while minimising overall risk.

The DNG3D system takes raw data from a wide range of commercial and military observation sensors to provide national defence systems with high-quality, high-precision geographical data.

The consortium will draw on the companies capabilities in various areas:

  • Prime contracting for major geographical data programmes
  • Exploitation of satellite and aerial image data
  • Geographical data production engineering
  • Relations with raw data suppliers and producers of end products.

Together, Thales and EADS have expertise based on more than ten years of experience in this field. By joining forces, the team will hope to offer the French administration a reliable, responsive industrial solution, maximum efficiency in organising and delivering the programme, and a broad spectrum of solutions based on the experience of each partner.

Thales has already developed FENRIS, a multi-sensor system designed to produce geographical data for the French Army and the APM3D system, a 3D model generation workbench in its current "intermediate" version, to be used by the armed forces to produce precise 3D models based on data from high-resolution earth observation satellites.
