Raytheon Systems Limited names its Paveway IV team

17 June 2003

Raytheon's UK subsidiary, Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL), has named the team of principal industrial partners who, subject to contract, will be engaged in the Paveway IV programme. This follows the UK Ministry of Defence's selection this week of Raytheon's Paveway IV to meet the Royal Air Force's requirement for a new Precision Guided Bomb.

Lockheed Martin is the design authority for the 500lb warhead. As such Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control is responsible for performance modelling, design produceability, and performance of the warhead and will support system integration, warhead testing, aircraft integration and flight certification.

MBM Technology of Brighton designed the mechanical and electrical interface system for Paveway IV.It consists of an new hardback, enabling universal multi-platform fit. MBM has been a development and integration partner on previous Paveway programmes including Paveway III and Enhanced Paveway II and III.

Portsmouth Aviation Limited (PAL) will be manufacturing the tail unit and the specialised transport containers for Paveway IV.The company has supported Raytheon on a number of successful Paveway programmes including Enhanced Paveway II and III for the UK and overseas airforces.

Thales Missile Electronics Ltd (TME) will be providing the Multi Event Hard Target Fuze (MEHTF) as a critical sub-system.The MEHTF is derived from advanced fuzing work undertaken by TME with their sub-contractor Alliant Techsystems (ATK) in support of joint UK/US Government research programmes over several years.

QinetiQ, will be undertaking the environmental, safety and performance testing and qualification of the Paveway IV warhead.

Societa Esplosivi Industriali (SEI) will manufacture and test the Lockheed Martin designed Mk 82 warhead in Sardinia.

RSL is the prime contractor to the UK government for Paveway IV with support from its sister company Raytheon Missile Systems (RMS). RMS will provide technical support including systems engineering and technology from its GPS growth plan.

RSL in Glenrothes, Scotland, will manufacture the guidance and control system as well as undertaking complete system integration.RSL in Harlow, Essex, will be responsible for programme management and RSL Bedford, from where Maverick and Enhanced Paveway II and III are supported, will be responsible for in-service support.

Raytheon's Paveway IV is the latest generation of the Paveway family of precision guided munitions that Raytheon already supplies to the RAF, the United States and 30 other major air arms.

Options exist for further enhancements:

  • RMS would supply the snap-on laser guidance kit as an option for growth if the MoD so wished. This would provide Paveway IV with dual-mode guidance capability.

  • Lockheed Martin would supply the LongShot wing Adaptor Kit as a capability enhancement option for extended range. If this option is exercised Lockheed Martin will be responsible for supporting weapon and aircraft and weapon integration activities.

  • MBM would supply the RAIDER smart multiple store carrier as a capability enhancement option for increased weapon load-out.
