Rockwell Collins has been selected by Air New Zealand to provide avionics for 15 new Airbus A320 aircraft with an option for an additional 20 aircraft. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to begin in September 2003.
The package consists of communication, navigation and surveillance sensors comprise. Included are the company's GLU-920 Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR) and the Collins WXR-2100 Multiscan weather radar.
The new Multiscan radar enhances safety by reducing the need for manual intervention. The automatic performance of radar scan patterns using multiple tilt angles and advanced data processing reduces pilot workload and provides more complete information for weather hazard avoidance. The Multiscan radar optimizes short- and long-range weather detection at all times without requiring pilot adjustment of the radar tilt control. The radar also alerts flight crews of potentially dangerous wind shear during takeoff and approach.
Collins' GLU-920 Mult-Mode Receiver is an integrated unit that provides the aircraft's primary position, velocity and time reference and enables precision landing capability. The MMR also offers instrument landing system capability and high-integrity, satellite-based positioning for navigation and future landing functions. The system also offers growth to support microwave landing system capability and can meetfuture air traffic management requirements while offering commonality across fleet types.
