Elbit demonstrates smart munitions kits

19 June 2003

Elbit Systems is demonstrating a complete arsenal of modular guidance kits which convert "dumb" general purpose bombs into very high precision strike munitions, able to seek, attack and destroy a full spectrum of targets.

Based on Image Infrared or Laser Seeking Guidance, Elbit Systems' fully autonomous, fire and forget smart munitions kits are effective solutions for enhancing the effectiveness of entire inventories of "dumb" bombs at a very affordable price.

WHIZZARD is a modular guidance kit family offering the option of Imaging Infrared seeker (OPHER), Laser-Seeker (LIZARD) or GPS guidance. Together they extend the capability to countertargets and threat ranging from motorised vehicles and ships to power plants, infrastructures and radars.

OPHER (IIR) provides autonomous target acquisition and homing on Motorised Targets. No target designation is required pre-or-post launch. OPHER operates day or night and in adverse weather conditions and is easily converted to LIZARD by replacing seekers.

LIZARD (Laser) is designed to strike any laser designated target. The kit has high precision proportional controls, higher hit probability with fewer sorties and bombs per target,. The LIZARD series has three models: Lizard 2 for stationary or slow moving targets, Lizard 3 for moving targets and trajectory shaping, and the most recent addition to the family, Lizard 4 (GAL -GPS Aided Laser) - an add-on module for in-stock LIZARD and OPHER kits, with or without terminal guidance at extended ranges and improved hit accuracy against moving targets.

LIZARD 4 is launched as a GPS guided ammunition with an option to use an IR or Laser seeker for high precision terminal guidance. In cases where laser designation is obscured by cloud cover, GPS guidance will continue until impact.

The entire family of smart, accurate, adverse weather weapons is designed for immediate compatibility with a variety of aircraft with no need for aircraft modifications or special pilot training.
