20 June 2003
A Pre-Delivery Inspection (P0I) has been successfully concluded on the first of six Super Lynx 300 destined for the Royal Malaysian Navy, which will now be transported by sea on time to Port Kelang in the second week of June. POIs will also be completed on aircraft 2, 4, 5 and 6 by July 2003 with subsequent deliveries being effected by the end of September. The third aircraft will be retained in the UK until Spring 2004 under a separate contract to fit the Sea Skua missile system.
The Malaysian Defence Ministry awarded a contract valued at some £100 million for six Super Lynx maritime helicopters in September 1999. AgustaWestland has initiated long-term strategic partnerships in Malaysia following the successful conclusion of separate industrial agreements with seven indigenous companies and organisations following the contract award. AgustaWestland is now well placed to implement a range of partnerships that will develop and enhance Malaysia's defence industry.
Operating under the guidance of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Defence, Malaysia, AgustaWestland is currently embarked on a contracted five year programme incorporating a range of high technology projects with a strategic group of seven beneficiaries. These are: AIROD, Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM), Defence Science & Technology Centre (PSTP/STRIDEJ, ME & 0 Fleet Support, Sapura Advanced Systems (SAS), SME Aerospace (SMEA) and Zetro Technology.
A diverse range of high technology activities are in motion involving technology transfer, training, aircraft support and sub-contract manufacture. Each project has been selected to meet the strategic aims of Malaysia in developing partnerships that will raise technology levels in aerospace related industries. New technologies, together with sub-contract manufacturing, will also lead to the growth of potential new export markets.
All five Super Lynx will be transported by sea to Malaysia and UK based technical representatives will be on hand to assemble the aircraft and AgustaWestland aircrew, who will also be stationed with the Squadron, will conduct ground runs and flight trials after the aircraft's assembly. The aircraft will then be presented for Final Acceptance. This will include a physical inspection of the aircraft and its documents together with a flight trial conducted by the Royal Malaysian Navy.
Spares and ground support equipment will be dispatched in containers for sea shipment with a final delivery planned for September. The aircraft are fully compliant with the contracted specification and will achieve the contracted delivery milestones. Final acceptance of the aircraft in country will be carried out between September and October and, once completed, the title transfers from AgustaWestland to the Malaysian Government.
Under a Government to Government contract, a Royal Navy aircrew team, trained by AgustaWestland in the UK, will be stationed at Lumut to provide further training. In addition, there will be two technical representatives, one mechanical and one electrical and a LHTEC technical representative that will be in residence at Lumut for a year. The AgustaWestland aircrew will also provide the second phase of pilot training as well as the second phase of continuation training for the Malaysian electrical, avionic and mechanical engineers.
