CMC Electronics Cincinnati to supply Northrop Grumman with IDAs for F-35

20 June 2003

CMC Electronics Cincinnati has been selected by Northrop Grumman Corporation's Electronic Systems sector as a team member supporting and protecting the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

CMC will provide mega-pixel Infrared Detector Assemblies (IDAs) used in the Electro-Optical Distributed Aperture System (EO DAS) suite of six sensors, which will give a 24-hour, all-weather, all-aspect imaging capability. The suite provides full spherical coverage around the aircraft for missile threat warning, navigation and situational awareness. An additional IDA will be used in the Electro Optical Targeting System (EOTS) pod in many of the aircraft.

With as many as 6,000 combined domestic and international aircraft, and six or more IDAs per aircraft, there is an anticipated demand for over 36,000 sensors for the F-35 JSF programme. This would make the F-35 the single largest electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) contract in history. Deliveries start next year and will continue for over 20 years.

"CMC's prior efforts with Northrop Grumman to provide mega-pixel detectors for proof of concept for the F-35, added to our reputation for delivering leading-edge technology," said Dr. James T. Wimmers, President and CEO, CMC Electronics Cincinnati. "This program will be completed in our Cincinnati, Ohio facility. Our ISO 9001 registered facility and extensive detector fabrication laboratories provide a fertile environment for the innovative engineering embodied in this latest design."
