Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC)recently delivered its 1,000th PW200 turboshaft engine. The PW200 engine series powers new generation light twin helicopters including the Agusta A109E, Bell 427, Eurocopter EC135, MD Helicopter's MD900/902 and the Kazan Ansat. The 1,000th engine was delivered to Eurocopter for an EC135P2 helicopter. A ceremony was held at the Paris Air Show during which a commemorative plaque was presented to Fabrice Bregier, Eurocopter's President. "This is a proud moment for Pratt & Whitney Canada, one that underscores the continued success of our PW200 family of engines in the helicopter market," said Alain M. Bellemare, P&WC's President.


Simula Inc announced at the Paris Air Show that it has been awarded a contract to develop and manufacture crashworthy armoured crew seats for the initial production run of the Boeing-Sikorsky Team's RAH-66 Comanche Armed Reconnaissance helicopter. Simula produced the crashworthy seats used in the RAH-66 during the advanced helicopter's "Demonstration-Validation (D-V)" phase, and will be adding its lightweight ceramic/composite armour to the newly designed "Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD)" version of the seat. The crew seats' armour is composed of a Simula-proprietary lightweight monolithic ceramic component that is bonded to a layered composite component to form the seat bucket and provide protection from projectile and fragmentation threats.


Smiths Aerospace has opened a new 66,000 sq. ft. aircraft engine components manufacturing facility in Suzho, Jiang Su province, China. The facility will manufacture precision-machined aircraft engine components for the civil marketplace. It is located 80 kilometres west of Shanghai. The facility will initially employ 150 employees and will start operation in quarter one 2004. "We are excited to create a world class engine components manufacturing facility in mainland China", said Dr. John Ferrie, Group Managing Director for Smiths Aerospace, "China brings the advantages of a highly skilled and competitive workforce to facilitate growth in low cost sourcing".
