Pratt & Whitney delivers first JT8D-219 to 7Q7June 17th, 1999
The engine is being installed in the number one position on SQS's B-707-320 flight test aircraft and will be used for single engine demonstrator flights this month. Four engines will be installed on the flight test aircraft later this year, leading to FAA certification by the end of the second quarter of 2000. SQS consists of Omega Air, which is providing financing, and Ed Swearingen, the well-known aircraft designer, who is providing technical assistance. Besides Pratt & Whitney, the team includes DER Engineering, for coordination of the certification effort; B.F. Goodrich for engine build unit components used in integrating the JT8D with the nacelle; and NORDAM for cowl doors and struts. B.F. Goodrich will also provide the engine's MD80 inlet and reversers. The JT8D commercial off-the-shelf engine package at 21,000 pounds of thrust will provide a major reduction in fuel consumption. It will also increase range while meeting ICAO emissions requirements and Stage III noise requirements. It is expected to provide significant improvements in engine durability and reliability, as well as costing much less to operate and maintain. Military-specific improvements include better fuel offload capabilities for tankers, a reduced infrared signature, and longer time-on-station. The team expects the package to be sold to about 50 commercial aircraft and is offering as an re-engining alternative for 50-150 US Air Force military aircraft and 50-75 foreign military aircraft.
