Ferranti Technologies awarded Eurofighter contract

    June 18th, 1999

Ferranti Technologies Limited (FTL) has been awarded a contract to develop a new power converter for the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The project will be worth in excess of £4 million to FTL over the life of the programme.

FTL is already an established supplier of power conversion equipment to the Eurofighter programme, having developed the Transformer Rectifier Units (TRU) which provide DC power from the main generator AC input. The company has recently received the go-ahead for TRU production, which will provide revenue approaching £12 million over the duration of the programme.

The Eurofighter power generation system has been designed to minimise the risk of total power loss by using a high level of redundancy and system partitioning. Autonomous operation is provided for engine start, systems test, avionics activation and alignment, without the need for external power.

FTL's latest contract covers the design and development of a DC-DC power converter, which forms an integral part of the Eurofighter power generation system. The converter ensures the support of essential equipment when the normal DC supplies are reduced to a low value during a battery powered auxiliary power unit start-up sequence.
